PMI prepares and updates a book describing PMI's project management standard derived from best practices in project management around the world and over the years. To be certified PMP, you need to master five process groups along with ten knowledge areas as specified in the PMBOK.

The five process groups are:

  • Project Initiation Process Group: In which stakehoders are defined and project charter get approved
  • Project Planning Process Group: Where the project management plan and its subsideray plans for scope, time, cost, quality, HR, communication, risk and procurements are developed
  • Project Execution Process Group: Where the project deliverables are build
  • Project Monitoring and Controlling Process Group: Where work is monitored and controlled. This covers changes, scope, cost quality, HR, commnication, risk and procurements
  • Project Closing Process Group: At the end the project will need professional closing wither because of completion or termination

And the ten Knowledge areas are:

  • Integration Management knowledge area The project manager and team need to ensure project componenets are integrated, that it starts with a project charter, has a project management plan, execution is managed and directed, monitoring and controlling is in place, changes are managed effectively, and closing is done professionally.
  • Scope Management knowledge area The project requirments should be picked, the scope needs be defined and the WBS should be created. Then the scope need be monitored and controlled all over the project.
  • Time Management knowledge area Time management skills including resouce and activity estimatioin techniques are needed to develope the project schedule then implementing and controlling it over the project.
  • Cost Management knowledge area Cost estimation, budget determination and cost controlling skills and techniques are needed
  • Quality Management knowledge area Quality assurance and quality controll techiques and skills are planned and implemented all over the project
  • Human Resources Management knowledge area Human Resources are one of the main factors of the project success. They need be planned, developed and managed for successful results. Many people poses high quality technical skills but when we come to people management, they fail due to lack of the skills and techniques in this fields
  • Communication Management knowledge area Communication is one of the most important activities a project manager and team makes. You need different communication skills to be a successful project manager
  • Risk Management knowledge area This is the area which is new to most of the PMP course attendees. It envolves indentification of risks and making qualitiative and quantitative analysis, planning responses, as well as controlling risks over the project
  • Procurement Management knowledge area Not every project needs procuremnet but the majority do. The project manager and his team needs to know how to indentify which products need be purchased, how to create RFP or similar documents, collect proposals, use negotiation skills to award the contract. Hecne contract types need be mastered, and much more skills
  • Stakeholder Management knowledge area This knowled area was added in the fifth edition of the PMBok. You will need to identify stakeholders, manage and controll their engagements in the project and this is one of the most iportant filds in project management

Social Responsibility of the project manager is also insisted in the test.

The exam is a four-hours-multiple-choice exam of which most questions present you a situation which needs your best decision selected from the four provided choices.

To sit for the test you will need 3 years experience as a Project Manager or any similar project management leadership position within the last 8 years from the date of application.

You will also need 35 hours training in project management.

You may select one of the test preparation material (books and CDs) to prepare for this test. However, all of these are based on the PMBOK.
